John Vormbaum

As Playground Global’s Principal Talent Partner, John works directly with founders and leadership teams to lead high-stakes executive searches and build a world-class talent network across the portfolio. He serves as a strategic advisor on talent planning, leadership assessment, and organizational design, helping portfolio companies scale effectively.

With 3 decades in talent, recruiting and search, John operates at the intersection of talent strategy, company building, and execution. He has built and led multiple companies that served startups from Seed through exit, and has been a VP/Head of Talent through acquisitions and an IPO. That operator's background gives him a clear view of what great hiring looks like, and where it breaks down as companies scale.

His focus areas include helping founders make early executive hires that shape company trajectory, building recruiting functions that scale efficiently rather than reactively, and getting the most out of search firms, RPOs, and other external partners.

John believes that strong talent and a positive culture are strategic advantages that pave the path to startup success.

John lives in Los Altos with his wife Sarah, 2 daughters, his giant dog and 4 cats. When he’s not at work, you can find him on the golf course, his road bike, or tinkering with one of his guitars.
